CDMA Celebrates 91 Years at 2017 Trade Expo

Monday, May 1, 2017

For 91 years, the Chain Drug Marketing Association (CDMA) has been helping to “make the connection” between regional chains, wholesalers, independent retailers, suppliers, and specialty distributors. This year, CDMA’s 91st Annual Trade Expo highlighted a Buyer Enrichment program that featured a presentation from the Hamacher Resource Group, a new mock pharmacy, and a celebration of Jim Devine’s career at CDMA.

Quality Choice (QC) partnered with the Hamacher Resource Group for this year’s Buyer Enrichment Program to bring education on merchandising best practices. Dave Wendland, VP of Strategic Relations at Hamacher Resource Group, presented “Marketing at Shelf: The Last 100 Feet.” Wendland’s presentation focused on the front-end opportunity and how drugstore owners and managers need to focus on shelf strategy and retail execution to viably compete in the age of “see it, buy it” consumer activity. According to Wendland, “Maximizing retail performance has come to depend largely on what transpires in the last 100 feet. Retailers have to replenish stock in a timely manner, add new items quickly, improve forecast accuracy and inventory turns, and collaborate with their wholesalers to drive value at the shelf.”

Expanding upon the idea of last year’s display shelves, a new QC mock pharmacy was featured at this year’s Trade Expo. This full mock pharmacy included gondolas, shelves, endcaps, racks, signage, and a check-out counter. With this, attendees had the opportunity to view and discuss QC merchandising such as signage programs with POS options, endcap themes, check-out floor stands, and PDQs. Jim Burd, HBC Director at Ingles Markets, Inc. commented, “I have a had the pleasure of attending the last five CDMA conferences. Each year I have come away with information that I can use to improve QC presence in my stores.”

The greatest highlight of the Trade Expo was celebrating Jim Devine’s career at CDMA. In February, former CDMA President Devine was awarded Chain Drug Review’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the Chain Drug industry during his 27-year career at CDMA. He was also presented with a gift from the CDMA Board of Directors, and was honored by industry business leaders in a video in which they shared how Devine impacted them and the Chain Drug industry over the years. Lynne Fruth from Fruth Pharmacy acknowledged, “Jim Devine took nothing and made it into something. Everything that we enjoy as members of CDMA and as customers is due in large part to the contributions that he’s made.” Bill Parsons, formerly of American Greetings, further expressed, “Jim is one of the best, and is recognized as that in all of the industry.”

In addition to the week’s main events, there were several opportunities for both buyers and vendors to network and be entertained. With a Western-themed Trade Expo, CDMA’s first networking event, the Welcome Reception, featured an 1880s-inspired saloon. The second event of the week, a Wild West Jamboree, featured a celebration night with dinner, awards, riding bull, photo booth, line dancing and live music.

This year’s Trade Expo was a great success. Bruce Kneeland, Sales and Marketing Specialist at Kneeland Services, stated “The CDMA Expo is truly a ‘must attend’ for any pharmacy that has, or wants to have, a profitable front-end. The vendors have some interesting products, and they come prepared to deal. But perhaps more important is the chance [you have] to visit with dozens of other pharmacy owners and front-end managers who are more than willing to share what they are doing that works. It is a great show.”
